The "E36" generation of the iconic BMW M3 was the first M3 powered by an inline-6 engine. The European market E36 M3 received an S50 engine with over 40 more horsepower than the United States version fitted with the de-tuned S52 engine.
Power comes from an "S50B30" 3.0-liter inline-6, rated at 282 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. Output is sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission.
