"The M3 is a legend in the world of performance cars, causing enthusiasts to gush over its visceral engines and razor-sharp handling. That legend, by the way, started all the way back in 1986 when the first M3—a performance edition of the similarly beloved E30 3-series—hit the scene. BMW baked this automotive version of a German chocolate cake to celebrate the M3’s 30th birthday: an M Competition package containing a 444-hp 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six (a 19-hp upgrade over the standard M3)
20-inch wheels and tires, a retuned Adaptive M suspension, revised exhaust plumbing, and a few distinctive exterior-design touches. Where the six-cylinder benefits over the old V8 is that it no longer needs to be pushed into the higher RPMs to get peak power; it’s available right down low and response at city speeds is improved significantly.
The M modes allow configuration of everything from suspension to steering and more, also allowing for full shutoff of the stability and traction control systems. When pushing it, the 444 horses make the car want to dance.
